SyncTV Digital Video Distribution Platform Takes Content over the Top

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Taking content over the top and delivering it to a broad range of devices is the main goal of SyncTV's powerful video services platform. TMC (News - Alert) CEO Rich Tehrani got to speak to Alexander Garcia-Tobar, CEO of the company, as part of TMC's On the Road series in San Jose, CA.

SyncTV's digital video distribution platform enables clients to deliver their content to a variety of devices through the Internet, including iPhones, iPads, televisions and Blu-Ray devices. The cloud-based platform features a back-end component, which takes content and puts it in the proper format. It also handles digital rights management, user and content management and billing and payment systems. The front end of the platform features applications that are tailor made for the devices SyncTV's customers want to deliver content to.

"It's a matter of a client coming to us, telling us which devices they want to work on," said Garcia-Tobar. "We will white label and customize the application so it has the brand and logo and look and feel of our client." The company will then publish it to whichever application stores the customer desires, making available to be up and running on a number of devices.

SyncTV's clients range from giant content creators like NBC Universal (News - Alert) who wish to push their content to devices very quickly, all the way to multiple service operators (MSOs) like small to midsize cable companies.

"Their users are shifting from only watching on television to now wanting to watch it on all sorts of devices," said Garcia-Tobar. However, smaller companies often don't have the IT power to develop platforms and applications to deliver their content "over the top." Using SyncTV's platform, these smaller players can reach as many devices as Netflix, Amazon or Hulu (News - Alert) Plus, and they don't have build or develop applications or worry about billing, since all of it is built into the company's platform.

The company recently announced an agreement with Japanese animation studio Dream Link Entertainment (DLE) to distribute the company's original animation content to US audiences using SyncTV's platform. The partnership enables DLE to instantly reach millions of US viewers through multiple digital channels including Roku set-top boxes, Android (News - Alert) devices and connected TVs.
