Cisco Announces the Launches of the Industry's Maiden Integrated Wireless TV Solution

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Cisco recently made an announcement on the launch of their first wireless IPTV service in association with AT&T (News - Alert). This is also a first in the industry.  Cisco has fresh wireless receivers and wireless access points (WAPs) and these can be had across the whole spectrum of AT&T U-verse TV footprint. This will start on Oct 31st of this year.

Customers will be able to use this wireless technology in order to have great video services anywhere in the house without necessitating the use of cables or wires. This technology will allow one to enjoy TV in any room or even in those that are not equipped to handle TVs. Rooms such as the kitchen, the basement or even the indoor garage are examples. Cisco (News - Alert) uses a wireless access point through an in-home Wi-Fi of a Cisco wireless receiver placed near the TV to send in TV content. All one has to do is plug in the TV to a source of power, add high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cables. Alternately any audiovisual connection to the TV will suffice. Once done, two buttons is all it takes to start the wireless connection.

In a release, GW Shaw, Executive Director of U-Verse Marketing, AT&T, said, “AT&T is bringing a new freedom to the TV experience, giving consumers the benefit of watching TV in virtually any room in the home. Cisco's wireless IPTV solution gives our customers flexibility with where they can place and watch their TVs, and offers a faster and simpler set-up process for customers and U-verse technicians."

Some of the features one can look forward to are that Cisco's wireless TV solution will be the only one to provide standard definition (SD) as well as high definition (HD) programming to several receivers. This it can do with a Wi-Fi that is part of it. One access point in any home will be able to power two receivers plugged in to TVs. The system offers TV channels are interactive services that will allow your entertainment to be a Total Home HD DVR.

Joe Chow, Vice President and General Manager, Connected Home Solutions, Service Provider Video Technology Group, Cisco, said, "Never before has it been so easy to move your TV around the home to wherever it suits you. We are excited to reach this industry milestone, becoming the first to bring wireless TV to market with AT&T. Cisco is pleased to achieve new heights as AT&T's wireless TV technology provider."
