The 2011 IPTV (News
- Alert) Market Leader Report from MRG Inc., which tracks pure-play IPTV deployments globally, revealed that the number of IPTV operators had increased over the past six months. It also indicated that there were over 50 million IPTV subscribers worldwide.
Additionally, using MRG's RankTracker system, a directional measurement tool, the report also tracked the semi-annual ups-and-downs of product rankings within the top 10 competitors within each of the six product sectors and five regional areas.
Jose Alvear (News - Alert), senior analyst at MRG noted that IPTV operators were not sticking to pure-play deployment and were complementing their offerings by using hybrid delivery methods -Satellite, digital terrestrial and OTT Internet services- to name a few. This move was expected to help them to expand into new regions and gain entry into new markets.
Similarly, he added, the same strategy was being adopted by many pay -TV operators around the world. Many of them were offering multiscreen services and delivering TV and VOD directly to the iPad and other smartphone devices.
Companies that offer full IPTV Ecosystems, the report said, have an advantage in offerings over the large IPTV vendors, who are making an effort to work with large telcos around the world. Smaller companies are finding favor with mid-size operators that are looking for high flexibility.
While ranking the companies according to category, Broadpeak figured at the top in the European VOD market while Harmonic (News
- Alert) was ranked at number one in European Video-Headend-Encoders.
ZTE moved upward in the Rest-of-World Access and in the Asian STB market while Huawei figured high in the global STB markets. Ericsson (News
- Alert) maintained its top position in the Asian Access market and moved upward in the Middleware sector. Motorola advanced rapidly in CP/DRM software market.
Another report from MRG gives concrete and mathematical evidence of the ROI guidelines and best practices developed for MSV services already deployed by IPTV, Cable and Satellite Operators worldwide. The report shows in detail that there are several ways to reach profitability or break-even for both large and small Operators.
