UTStarcom Gets Contracts to Build IPTV Platforms

UTStarcom Holdings Corp. a global provider of interactive, IP-based network solutions in iDTV, IPTV (News - Alert), Internet TV and broadband for cable and telecom operators, recently announced that Fujian Telecom and Zhejiang Telecom, provincial subsidiaries of China Telecom (News - Alert), have awarded it contracts to build new IPTV 2.0 platforms in order to support IPTV network expansion.


At present, IPTV network covers nearly two million users across the cities of Fujian and Zhejiang. The network also has presence in cities of Sichuan, Shenzhen, Beijing, Hubei, Hunan and Shandong. Officials from China Telecom said that the two new IPTV 2.0 platforms in the cities of Wenzhou and Taizhou will help the company further expand its IPTV network and serve a large base of new subscribers.  

“We are excited to have won these two contracts after a rigorous nationwide testing and bidding process,” UTStarcom (News - Alert) President and CEO Jack Lu said, in a statement. “We will continue to execute against our growth strategy of serving China's telecommunications and cable customers in tandem. We are confident our IPTV platform will provide a solid foundation for the large scale deployment of China Telecom's IPTV 3.0 standard and better serve the newly announced 42 three network convergence trial cities in 2012.”

Founded in 1991, UTStarcom enables its customers to rapidly deploy revenue-generating access services using their existing infrastructure, while providing a migration path to cost-efficient, end-to-end IP networks.

Recently, the company announced that the their board of directors appointed Jack Lu, CEO of UTStarcom, as chairman of the Board, effective March 31, 2012. Lu will succeed Thomas Toy, who has resigned as a member and chairman of the Board, effective March 31, 2012. Toy will remain with the company in an advisory role for a period of six months following the effective date of his resignation.
