Anevia ViaMotion Creates Better Video-on-Demand Experience

By Jacqueline Lee, Contributing Writer

Anevia (News - Alert), Inc. has announced that their ViaMotion origin server and HTTP packaging solution now supports multi-bitrate TS video with the industry’s leading encoders. Anevia delivers IPTV (News - Alert) and OTT solutions to enable video-on-demand delivery to TVs, PCs and mobile devices that support Apple HTTP Live Streaming, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, Adobe (News - Alert) Flash HDS and MPEG-DASH.

With multi-bitrate TS encoders, broadcasters and telecom companies can use the same TS stream for both IPTV and OTT services. The solution also facilitates functions like ad insertion, subtitles and other features that rely on encoder specific TS video markers.

ViaMotion was recently nominated for a 2012 TV Innovation Award by IMS Research in the category of Best On-Demand Solution. ViaMotion 3.2, which contains the TS support updates, also includes a Live2File feature for deploying Start-Over and Catch-Up TV. A new advanced push mode will facilitate integration with CDNs.

“We are experiencing very high demand from all our market segments, whether fixed and mobile operators, broadcasters, content providers or hospitality, for new live and on-demand television applications for television, mobile phones and PCs,” explained Tristan Leteurtre, President and Co-founder of Anevia.

IPTV solutions deliver television broadcasts using the Internet protocol suite over a packet-switched network. OTT, or “over-the-top,” means that the solution bypasses operators of paid programming to deliver broadcasts directly to a connected TV, PC or second screen.

TS, or Transport Stream, is used to transmit audio, video and data and is used in DVB and ATSC broadcast systems. TS has error correction and stream synchronization that maintains transmission integrity when the signal is degraded. Where Program Stream, or PS, is designed for reliable media like disks, TS is designed for less reliable media, like broadcast. Also, one TS can carry multiple Program Streams.

Anevia’s ViaMotion solution is a favorite programming delivery vehicle for cruise ships, hotels and healthcare facilities. “Anevia’s IPTV and video on demand solutions are based on open technologies that allow easy integration in hotel entertainment systems and corporate IP networks,” says the company’s website. “Advanced features such as conditional access and mosaic menu generation allow for customizing guest services and generating new revenue streams.”
