Broadband Forum Unveils Latest Edition of BroadbandSuite

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

The Broadband Forum, formerly the DSL Forum, recently launched the latest edition of its BroadbandSuite, BroadbandSuite 3.0.

The BroadbandSuite 3.0 provides specifications for triple-play services that will be delivered via GPON (gigabit capable passive optical fiber network) and bonded DSL over QoS-enabled Ethernet architecture. It also supports fully for multicast to IPTV (News - Alert) streaming.

Released in 2007, the BroadbandSuite 2.0 provided a roadmap for triple-play access via ADSL2plus only. With an increase in the demand for the ability to deliver triple-play services such as IPTV over a variety of different access technologies, the Broadband Forum responded and released BroadbandSuite 3.0.

George Dobrowski, president and chairman of the Broadband Forum, said, "With over 17 million IPTV subscribers around the world -- two and half million in the US alone -- the ability to offer triple play services is essential if a service provider is to remain successful in such a competitive market. However, different geographical areas and landscapes demand different access technologies.

George added: "The Forum understands these demands and is working hard to establish specifications that cover the range of access technologies, from DSL to fiber, ensuring Quality of Service and Quality of Experience for all customers, wherever they are. We believe that our BroadbandSuite Release Plan, which provides a clear and concise blueprint, is the way to do this.”

The BroadbandSuite 3.0 has the capability to deliver triple-play services over a number of different access technologies. This will offer more and more service providers with various options to offer new revenue generating services, such as IPTV, thereby facilitating them to gain market share in the competitive market.

Another key feature of the BroadbandSuite 3.0 is integrated remote management of set-top-boxes (STB) and attached storage devices. This new release offers specifications that are required to successfully remotely manage the multimedia home network, thereby helping service providers to reduce costs. It also enables technicians to remotely fix faults reducing truck roll, thereby consuming less time that is spent on the field.

The Broadband Forum says that BroadbandSuite 3.0 also aids to increase customer loyalty and satisfaction, as the majority of problems can be resolved without any inconvenience to the customer.

Key benefits and features of BroadbandSuite 3.0 will be showcased at 2008 Telco TV. The Broadband Forum says that this multi-vendor showcase will walk attendees through the Broadband ecosystem and core-to-home network, explaining the latest advancements and options available for service providers to optimize their networks. The Showcase will be supported by ADTRAN (News - Alert), ClearAccess, Comtrend, Corning Cable Systems, Ericsson, D-Link, Intel, Juniper Networks, Motive, Motorola, and Occam Networks.

The Broadband Forum aims to develop the full potential of broadband. Primarily focusing on home-to-core network and management solutions, the forum’s standards empower service providers to achieve more with their broadband deployment.
