Alcatel-Lucent's Digital Media Suite of Products Support Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV Platform

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Alcatel-Lucent has announced that its digital media suite of products now support the Microsoft Mediaroom Presentation Framework. The Microsoft Mediaroom Presentation Framework is a multimedia application environment for the Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV (News - Alert) platform. Alcatel-Lucent is a strategic reseller and systems integration partner for Microsoft Mediaroom.

The Microsoft (News - Alert) Mediaroom Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and multimedia software platform allows broadband service providers to offer new connected TV and entertainment experiences to consumers all over the world. Consumers can discover new ways to experience TV as part of their connected, digital lifestyle. For broadband service providers, hardware manufacturers, content creators, advertisers and application developers, it creates new business opportunities.

With Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), Microsoft's IPTV platform can enable IPTV service providers to enhance ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) and generate new revenue streams. Apart from offering interactive advertising services, it also helps them to provide personalized multimedia and on-demand offerings.

“By streamlining service operation over IPTV platforms, Alcatel-Lucent enables service providers to concentrate on content retailing and maximizing their advertising space," said Rik Missault, vice president of Alcatel-Lucent's Digital Media and Advertising Division. "IPTV providers leveraging Alcatel-Lucent's solutions can infuse subscriber services with a rich mix of video, music, games, mobile, and interactivity to make the IPTV viewing experience more personal and compelling for subscribers.”

Alcatel-Lucent's digital media suite provides features such as pre-tested templates which allow the operators to create new interactive TV applications such as voting, enhanced TV or interactive advertisement. An operator can also upload a digital media asset once and monetize that asset across many devices and users. Also, by cross-promoting video assets with music and other services, content packaging to personalize the user's experience is simplified.

Alcatel-Lucent recently launched 8661 Directory Server, a high-performance service enablement platform for the creation of personalized Web 2.0 and communications services over wireline and mobile networks. According to the company, this platform will improve service quality and reduce time to market. The directory server is developed by UnboundID Corporation and sold to service providers by Alcatel-Lucent.
