Global IPTV Forecast Exceeds Earlier Prediction: Report

By Erin Harrison, Executive Editor, Strategic Initiatives

The U.S. continues to show significant growth in IPTV (News - Alert) adoption, however China and Europe still lead in deployments. A new industry forecast indicates that global IPTV subscribers will grow from 28 million in 2009 to 83 million in 2013, a compound annual growth rate of 31 percent.

MRG this week announced the November 2009 edition of the “IPTV Global Forecast: 2009 to 2013.” The new report uses information on over 800 IPTV deployments around the world, and includes a forecast for IPTV subscribers, service revenue and system revenue from 2009 to 2013.

The European region will continue to lead in IPTV deployments in 2013 with 48 percent share, followed by Asia, North America and “rest of world.”

As TMCnet reported, Strategy Analytics (News - Alert) announced in its market research Multiplay Market Dynamics service report titled, “United States IPTV Market Sizing: 2009-2013,” that the U.S. IPTV market segment is expected to have 15.5 million subscribers and $15 billion in service revenues by 2013.

As the economy seems to be improving, service providers are still reporting solid growth, which both contribute to the forecast adjustment, according to Jose Alvear (News - Alert), MRG IPTV analyst. “This was done in response to the better-than-expected growth exhibited by the major service providers around the world in 2009,” he said.

According to the report, the total service revenue for 2013 is projected at$38 billion, also up sharply from the last forecast. The four regions analyzed include a breakdown of capital spending, service revenue, and DSL & IPTV subscribers; and seven IPTV system sectors, including access systems, video headends, video-on-demand, set-top boxes, middleware, content protection/digital rights management, and system integration/professional services.

MRG’s new report includes added information on strategies and new services being added to IPTV offerings, according to firm officials.

“Consumers are beginning to understand the advantages of IPTV,” said Gary Schultz, MRG president. “Simultaneously, IPTV operators are facing more competition, driving rapid investment in both infrastructure and new services.”
