X-Rite Intros Linux & Mac Version SDKs for Hubble Colorimeter

By Raja Singh Chaudhary, TMCnet Contributor

X-Rite Incorporated, a provider of color management, measurement and communication technologies, has reportedly announced that it launched a new software development toolkit or ‘SDK’ for its Hubble non-contact laser-guided colorimeter.

Hubble is a solution that helps the users in having a consistent and precisely calibrated view on all types of displays including LCD, LCD/RPTV, direct view CRT, CRT/ RPTV, front projectors and plasma. The solution costs less when compared to high-end display color measurement devices that are traditionally used by media and entertainment professionals, the company said. It acts as a primary instrument for single-instrument applications, and offers a high-accuracy secondary reference through simple calibration to the primary instrument.

With the help of the new Hubble SDK, the third party developers and original equipment manufacturers or ‘OEMs’ can design their own integrated display calibration applications to create cost-effective color-managed workflows for high-end color displays such as cinema production, post- production, home theater, digital cinema and digital signage.

In addition, users can calibrate Hubble to their own standards and use it to match their expensive reference instruments. The SDK will also help them take a measurement from their display and import the results directly into their applications, allowing customers to create a tightly integrated and precisely accurate color management workflow.

X-Rite is going to make the new product immediately available for both Linux and Mac-based applications to complement the existing Windows version. The Windows based version of the Hubble SDK has already deployed by a number of OEM partners, including ARRI, the world’s largest manufacturer of professional motion picture equipment, Sencore (News - Alert), a world leader in content delivery solutions, and Spectracal, a leading developer of home theatre calibration software, in developing custom solutions suiting their needs.

The company has partnered with Cine-tal Systems, a developer of image monitoring and color management solutions for developing these Linux and Mac-based applications so that Hubble could be used across all computing platforms along with the cineSpace color management software suite.

According to Richard Schott of Cine-tal Systems, a significant portion of the creative services industry is powered by the Mac and Linux computing platforms, and bringing support for the Hubble to these users helps Cine-tal to better serve its customers’ color management needs, in a cost effective manner.

In December, X-Rite had reportedly announced that it was going to begin shipping EasyTrax, its affordable, semi-automated press-side color scanning solution. The new system was already being used in production in small to mid size printing shops in France, the UK, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa and throughout North America.
