By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

After providing fixed communication services across 14 cities of the central, eastern, and western parts of Ukraine, Velton Telecom Ltd., a private Ukrainian operator plans to launch a field trial of IPTV (News - Alert) services to business and residential subscribers in Kharkov and Poltava.

Velton Telecom leverages Alcatel-Lucent’s IP/MPLS and GPON solutions and use Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV and multimedia software platform for the launch. Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) has achieved high level of expertise in this field. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent is going to provide comprehensive professional services including project management, consulting, network design, installation, software integration, commissioning and operations.

Velton Telecom aims to offer its subscribers a range of services including high-speed Internet access, IPTV, and VoIP services. The IPTV field trial prepares the ground for the realization of these goals. The field trial leverages the previously deployed IP/MPLS and GPON network that provides scalability, bandwidth on demand, as well as increased service level guarantees.

While Velton Telecom is targeting the growing IPTV and broadband market, Alcatel-Lucent is ready to share its wealth of experience in network transformations, to help the telecom giant achieve its goals.

“The IP/MPLS and broadband access capabilities from Alcatel-Lucent’s solution enable us to stay in line with the service transformation processes that we see as vital in our market, as we now introduce IPTV services,” Anatoly Protsyuk, chairman of Velton Telecom, said.

Subscribers require simple and easy access to advanced, content-rich communication services, and operators need flexible and reliable platforms to respond to this demand,”
Alcatel-Lucent on the other hand is utilizing Microsoft (News - Alert) Mediaroom as the software platform for Velton Telecom’s IPTV service. The Mediaroom platform has been chosen to enhance the quality of Velton Telecom’s IPTV service. It is going to incorporate such  advanced features as an intuitive on-screen guide with keyword search to find current or future programs, instant channel change, video on demand and the ability to record, pause, rewind and fast forward TV programs.

As network integrator for the project, Alcatel-Lucent is providing its end-to-end GPON offering based on the Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ISAM FTTU in combination with the 5520 Access Management System. It also leverages its 1540 Litespan MSAN product, the Alcatel-Lucent 7324 ISAM Remote Unit, and SAM and SSC management systems.

On the platform of Alcatel-Lucent solutions, Velton Telecom aims to establish a core and distribution network. To accomplish this goal, Alcatel-Lucent will also provide its IP/MPLS service routing solution based on the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 Ethernet Service Switch and the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router.

The commercial launch of the IPTV service is expected on the second half of 2010.
