NTT Electronics Intros 4-Channel Encoder

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

Tokyo-based NTT Electronics has announced it developed the MPC1010 MPEG-2 HDTV/SDTV Multi-Channel Encoder. This digital broadcast platform is expected to bring significant cost savings for broadcast operators moving to HDTV and DTV multi-channel capability.

The MPC1010 can be installed with multiple MPEG-2 HDTV/SDTV encoders and this results in high image quality, high reliability and high cost performance. The unit features an encoder IC that provides high- quality MPEG-2 videos which helps the MPC1010 to support both HDTV (1080i and 720p) and SDTV (576i and 480i) standards.

The MPC1010 is also ideal for digital terrestrial broadcast systems as it complies with the ATSC standard and includes TS MUX and PSIP generation features. The product not only includes the DVB-ASI output interface, but also includes IP output capability.

Koichi Masaki, the newly appointed general manager of the Multimedia Systems Division at NTT Electronics explained that the transition to HDTV and multi-channel capability needs significant capital investment to ensure that proper digital broadcast facilities are established.

The related expenses have given rise to a need for cost efficient options in building such systems. Masaki said that the MPC1010 has been designed to provide operators with such an option.

The modular design of the MPC1010 enables for flexible adaptation to operator needs. The unit can provide simultaneous encoding of up to four different video and audio channels in a single rack. Moreover, the product can support TS MUX and PSIP generation functionality, and in turn it contributes to simplification of operation, space savings, and reduced cost.

The MPC1010 is scheduled to go on sale in North America in the third quarter of 2009.

Last week, the company announced the global release of HVD6100, a professional 4:2:2 integrated receiver decoder (IRD) for broadcast contribution and distribution. HVD6100 is ideally suited for satellite, broadcast, cable and telco operators.
