Mirics Develops Global Broadcast TV Solution for NVIDIA GPUs

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Mirics has announced that it has developed a global broadcast TV solution for NVIDIA (News - Alert) graphics processing units.

A universal low-cost TV receiver can now be implemented on entry-level PCs that have CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPUs by leveraging the parallel NVIDIA CUDA architecture for the Mirics FlexiTV software-based receiver, according company officials.

NVIDIA CUDA-enabled GPUs are ideal for real-time signal processing, said Michael Steele, general manager of visual consumer solutions at NVIDIA. He added that the “combination of the NVIDIA CUDA architecture and FlexiTV means low priced netbooks, notebooks and desktop PCs can deliver high definition PC TV viewing experiences.”

The running of certain FlexiTV algorithms on NVIDIA CUDA-enabled GPUs enables so-called “optimum” use of system processing resources. Company officials said that this allows entry level PCs to support global TV reception using Mirics’ FlexiTV technology.

FlexiTV uses separate CUDA compute engines for video decoding, offering high definition broadcast TV reception. In addition, it eliminates the need for additional hardware.

Moreover, unlike traditional PC TV receivers, FlexiTV features a single platform which is software reconfigurable to receive free-to-air terrestrial TV regardless of regional variations, said officials.

“Mirics has significantly expanded the range of PC platforms that can support global TV reception by combining FlexiTV with the powerful NVIDIA CUDA architecture,” said Simon Atkinson, CEO at Mirics, adding that the latest innovation benefits PC OEMs with a cross platform, low-cost TV solution, and empowers consumers with the widest multi-media content choice.

Mirics’ CUDA-optimised FlexiTV solution is currently sampling to selected customers.

Mirics is a provider of system solutions for converged wireless connectivity on portable consumer electronic devices such as notebook PCs, media players and cell phones.

Earlier in August, the company added ISDB-T OneSeg support to its FlexiTV multi-standard PC TV receiver and signed agreements with PC TV accessory providers Quincy Digital of Korea and Skycast of Brazil.
