By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Nuance Communications (News - Alert), a provider of voice and language solutions for businesses and consumers, announced that OnStar RemoteLink mobile app for iPhone now features voice recognition capabilities powered by Dragon, the speech recognition software from Nuance Communications.

Dragon speech recognition software lets subscribers use their voice to create and edit documents or e-mails, launch applications, open files, control their mouse, and more.

RemoteLink now features new navigation capabilities powered by Dragon, which let customers input directions and search for destinations just by using their voice. The integration was part of the Nuance Mobile Developer Program.

The new mobile app is available for Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC owners with eligible 2010 or 2011 model year vehicles. With this advancement, customers can also take advantage of RemoteLink’s new navigation features by simply speaking a destination.

“The new enhanced navigation services we are adding to the RemoteLink mobile app help to ensure that our subscribers are able to get directions and destination information no matter where they are,” said Steve Schwinke, director of Advanced System Design, OnStar, in a statement. “And by integrating voice recognition and search capabilities, users can quickly and easily speak an address or destination, get results, send them to OnStar – and be on their way.”

Customers of OnStar can also connect with the OnStar Virtual Advisor to access personalized weather and traffic updates. Nuance also powers the voice recognition capabilities of the recently announced OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle) retail mirror that brings OnStar’s in-vehicle safety, security and communication service to more than 90 million vehicles on the road.

Says, Arnd Weil, vice president and general manager, Nuance Automotive, “Voice has quickly proven to be one of the most natural and convenient mobile interfaces, and with our portfolio of Dragon-powered SDKs, developers and telematic services providers like OnStar can easily give their consumers an innovative app experience that maps back to their mobile lifestyle.”

The OnStar RemoteLink app is currently available for free for iPhone (News - Alert) on the Apple App Store in the US.

Recently Nuance Communications formed a partnership with US Airways to launch the travel industry’s first Natural Language Understanding (NLU) Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. Deployed in phases over a two-day period the new IVR is shortening call times and providing customers with more self-service opportunities.
