AT&T Developing Voice-Enabled Assistant for Connected Car

By Rachel Ramsey, TMCnet Contributor

Automakers are developing and increasing production of connected cars to customize the user experience and give drivers a safe way to get access to their favorite apps.

AT&T (News - Alert) recently announced plans to begin developing a connected, voice-enabled virtual assistant for use by automotive manufacturers.

The technology will be provided along with QNX Software Systems Limited and backed by AT&T’s patented WATSON speech engine, providing a complete cloud based voice-enabled natural language mobile virtual assistant solution for wirelessly connected vehicles.

QNX Software Systems recently demonstrated its Car 2 application platform, a solution that will allow automotive developers to harness the rich user experience of HTML5 on a software foundation for millions of vehicles. The QNX Car 2 application platform introduces a new, auto-centric HTML5 framework.

Embracing HTML5 will enable automakers to keep their vehicles fresh with new content and features, to address consumer demands for the latest mobile apps and services and to leverage a huge developer community.

AT&T has more than 500 speech-related patents that can process speech, text and gesture inputs for things such as placing and receiving calls, navigation and basic Web browsing. AT&T’s speech engine, WATSON, is a multimodal and multilingual speech and language engine for a wide range of applications.

At the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES (News - Alert)), automotive companies focused on the connected car experience. Customers will embrace connected services when they include both safe delivery and compelling design.

The Strategy Analytics (News - Alert) report, “User Needs and Best Practices for Implementing Connected Services in the Car,” revealed that consumers are interested in a connected car primarily for local fuel prices, local weather and Internet radio.

“Wireless innovations in the automotive space continue to expand and this is great news for consumers,” said Glenn Lurie, president of emerging devices, resale and partnerships, AT&T. “By rolling out this prototype, we’re able to collaborate with companies and manufacturers to develop safer driving environments for customers.”

A prototype will be used to develop a complete voice enabled mobile virtual assistant solution for the connected vehicles platform that is designed to limit driver distraction by focusing on customer needs and system interface usability to improve safety and comfort.

“User experiences that are natural and intuitive, that simplify across to mobile and cloud-based services, and that help drivers stay focused are key to consumer adoption of tomorrow’s connected vehicles,” said Derek Kuhn, vice president of sales and marketing, QNX Software Systems. “Cloud-based speech recognition provided by solutions like AT&T WATSON will help accelerate this adoption, by allowing users to interact with their vehicle in a natural way, using everyday language.
