What Does LG's New 'Magic Remote' Mean for Speech Recognition?

By Allison Boccamazzo, TMCnet Web Editor

Remember the day when the revelation of “pausing TV” happened? In reality, this was really just the DVR device recording live TV in real-time onto a separate storage device, but it sure came in handy when we wanted to catch that important speech, football pass or result in our favorite variety show when we couldn’t make it. Now, LG Electronics (News - Alert) is upping the ante to take the leisure of watching good old TV to new, interactive heights with the help of enhanced speech recognition software.

Today, LG Electronics revealed its all new Magic Remote for its CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup, which boasts enhanced speech recognition capabilities for increased efficiency by making use of verbal, natural, interactive and even conversational voice commands. The new design will also continue to implement its four control options of voice, gesture, point and wheel.

When using this gadget, you need only issue a verbal command to the TV when watching, and new natural language recognition software allows the user to talk in a more conversational manner. For example, the wheel feature allows users to easily scroll up r down a Web page while zooming in and out of applications – all while watching TV.

Imagine if when wanting to change a channel, all you had to do was wave the remote to “write” it in the air? This is the type of phenomenal power LG’s new Magic Remote is touting. Furthermore, this remote comes in two highly functional models – one which ships with LG’S CINEMA 3D Smart TVs and the other with the company’s standard CINEMA 3D Smart TV models, as elaborated in a statement.

But just how far can this Siri-style technology go? It’s important to note just how far this type of technology, which was originally used via interactive voice response (IVR) software for such things as call centers, has transformed today’s rapidly modernizing era.
