TMCnet's Knowledge Management Week in Review

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

Knowledge Management (KM) can be described as more than just a platform to organize information. It’s an integrated approach to achieve organizational goals by allowing employees, managers, administration and others to really hone in on the management of the knowledge base, how departments communicate, and how to increase productivity and workflow within the organization.

Many companies announced this week that they are launching, upgrading or taking their KM system to the next level by going into the cloud.

To help suppliers and manufactures work together, ARC Advisory Group, a research and advisory firm for manufacturing, industry and infrastructure, is launching a new online platform called ARC STAR. The new browser-based platform will allow users to login online and make strategic supplier selections.

“Ultimately, ARC STAR (News - Alert) will be available for more key enterprise, automation and manufacturing software application areas. The ARC STAR service is currently available for advanced process control (APC (News - Alert)), analytics for operational excellence batch control systems, collaborative product management/MES (for discrete and process industries) and distributed control systems (DCS),” reported TMCnet’s Contributor Tracey E. Schelmetic.

“The service guides users through a step-by-step process selecting and evaluating suppliers and their products against specific application and cultural requirements, including project and team definition, reviewing and editing ARC-provided selection criteria and supplier questions, weighing selection criteria, developing a supplier request for information list, evaluating supplier responses, and developing a final ranking of RFI (News - Alert) results,” she wrote.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York will be seeing some additional features with a new upgraded Aerobahn System from Saab Sensis. The company revealed it has been working hard for the past few months to increase reporting and navigation, and reduce expenses – and even go mobile.

Nathesh, a TMCnet Contributor, said the new browser-based platform would enable airports, airlines and air navigation service providers to “more efficiently and cost-effectively manage and measure airside operations.” The U.S.’ first operational Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) environment now features flight-specific call for taxi times that can improve sequencing and bring down fuel burn and environmental emissions.

In addition, the airport can expect to see more frequencies to list to ATC voice and tracking information, real-time communications from the overall system, and complete operational flight information including arrivals, departures and flight connection information.

Lastly, KANA has made the decision to help governmental agencies move their systems into the cloud with its latest development, Lagan Express. The solution, which had its debut at the 98th Annual Conference of the International City/County Management Association in Arizona, is designed to help governmental agencies manage their customers in a more efficient manner.

“It offers a wide array of both knowledge management systems and contact systems – including several that use multiple channels – geared toward not only making customer contact more efficient overall, but both faster and more accurate,” said TMCnet Contributing Writer, Steve Anderson. “It can be used as a chat client, an e-mail contact client and even a Web chat service to ensure that when customers have questions, they’re likely to be answered by at least one available contact method.”

KANA might have decided to release its cloud-based service now, only a couple of weeks before the election to help government agencies deal with improving service and money. “KANA’s Lagan Express would look to do a pretty good job of either one of those functions, giving current administrators everywhere just a little extra help in the pursuit to keep their current jobs,” said Anderson.
