With 12 U.S. patents, and another 12 patents pending, San Diego, Calif- based imaging software solutions provider, Mitek Systems (News - Alert), boasts one of the industry’s strongest patent portfolios.
The company recently brought patent infringement charges against Top Image Systems (TISA), an Israel-based ECM solutions provider.
The infringement suit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.
The five patents that are being contested include the U.S. Patent Nos. 7,778,457; 7,949,176; 7,953,268; 7,978,900; and 8,000,514.
Mitek’s expertise lies in the development of mobile imaging software that allows users to remotely deposit checks, pay bills, get insurance quotes and transfer credit card balances by snapping a picture with their smartphone or tablet cameras instead of using the device keyboard.
Mitek gets the credit for pioneering the industry's gold standard technology enabling mobile deposits on smartphones and tablets. The company’s patent portfolio covers the processes for depositing a check, processing the image and creating a Check21-compliant image – irrespective of the type of the device that is being used for image capture.
Mitek’s mobile imaging technology helps eliminate consumers’ need for going to the bank branch or automated teller machine, and dramatically reduces processing and customer acquisition costs while raising customer retention.
Top Image Systems (News - Alert) (TIS) has filed for a patent regarding mobile capture capabilities for capture and analysis of full page/A4 forms, as employed in its MobiFLOW mobile capture and processing platform.
According to a statement, Mitek is seeking damages against Top Image Systems and injunctive relief to prevent Top Image Systems from selling its mobile imaging products, such as MobiCHECK.
MobiCHECK is a Remote Deposit Capture platform capable of capturing and analyzing full-page/A4 forms. TIS claims to employ an image capturing method that allows for stitching of images to create a mosaic image of a document ready for text analysis and indexing.
According to TIS, this technology allows a mobile device to effectively capture and analyze full page forms – such as insurance claims or healthcare forms.
Just last month, TIS filed for patent regarding this innovation.
Recently Mitek Systems announced that a slew of credit unions have signed on for agreements with the company for its Mobile Deposit technology. Mitek is providing these credit unions with the technology to deposit checks at any time and from any geographical location. This is made possible by Mitek’s camera-based smartphone and tablets.
In a side-by-side comparison from the past year, Mitek has exponentially increasing its involvement with the credit union market.
