Cloud computing decreases IT-related capital expenditures for companies, but the benefits of a cloud computing solution may be adversely affected by the lack of tax allowances.
Recently, TaxConnex announced that the company’s founder, Robert Dumas, will be a featured panelist in Law Seminars International upcoming teleconference. The teleconference concentrates on the tax and regulatory consequences of cloud-based services consisting of SaaS (News - Alert) and hosted VoIP.
Other panelists include Allison Rule and Jonathan Marashlian of The CommLaw Group. According to the company, the topics will focus on what people need to know about the various “nexus” standards and the reason behind some cloud-based services getting taxed while others escape these taxes.
The sale tax nexus from TaxConnex is a physical connection between an out-of-state company and a specific taxing jurisdiction. This makes the company liable for gathering and remitting sales tax on their transactions. Having an office in a particular state is a clear example of such nexus. But there are various other activities that could also promote nexus and this can be risky to your business.
“While state taxing statutes have traditionally failed to keep pace with technological developments, a number of states have their eyes on potential revenue that can be tapped by taxing cloud-based services. Cloud-based providers need to not only recognize that the paradigm is shifting; they need to prepare for it,” said Robert Dumas, Founder and Managing Partner at TaxConnex.
Recently, the company added new telecom and VoIP tax clients and features. TaxConnex now works for many of the highly recognized names in telecom and also various new VoIP service providers that are moving to change the public switched telephone network. To enable growth, TaxConnex continues to create infrastructure and professional relationships, and also, the company continues to enhance TaxConnex Practitioner resources available to telecom clients.
