NextPlane, a provider of cloud-based federation services for unified communications, announced that end users with Microsoft (News - Alert) Office Communicator (MOC) and Lync clients can seamlessly integrate chat rooms hosted on XMPP-based UCs into their contact lists using the NextPlane Federation Cloud service, now upgraded with XMPP group chat federation.
Microsoft OCS 2007 and Lync 2010 users reportedly have the option to deploy the NextPlane Federation Cloud service as a central exchange in order to connect UC platforms, which in turn results in business communities that have better collaboration options.
“Enabling group chat federation is an important component in building federated communities, a strategy that more and more competitive organizations are adopting with the aid of the NextPlane Federation Cloud service to connect to suppliers, partners and customers in real time,” said Farzin Shahidi, founder and CEO at NextPlane. “For the first time, Microsoft users can participate in XMPP hosted chat rooms.”
XMPP stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, a set of open technologies for instant messaging, presence, multi-party chat, voice and video calls, collaboration, lightweight middleware, content syndication and generalized routing of XML data.
In addition to standard chatroom features such as room topics and invitations, the XMPP group or multi-user chat allows participants to kick and ban other users, nominate room moderators and administrators and demand memberships or passwords to join a chat and more.
NextPlane supports the restrictions imposed by members-only rooms as well.
The UC provider explained that its Federation Cloud service seamlessly and securely federates users on Jive OpenFire environments with colleagues on Microsoft Lync 2010, OCS 2007 R2, OCS 2007 R1 and LCS 2005; Cisco CUPS, WebEx Connect, and Jabber XCP; IBM Sametime; and Google (News - Alert) Apps. It offers a rich set of hi-fidelity federation capabilities across a wide range of UC platforms.
