Mightybell Takes Social Networking to New Frontier with Live Chat

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

If there is one particular technological advance that America Online (AOL (News - Alert)) is well known for, it would have to either be its email service (which has fallen by the wayside in recent years) or its instantmessagingsoftware. What almost no one thinks of when they are talking about AOL, is social networking.

Mightybell founder Gina Bianchini is trying to make a change in that regard as Mightybell is looking to be a brand new kind of social networking site where there is more focus on interactions with other people, instead of simply trumpeting your thoughts on every subject that comes up over the course of any given day.

“In the early Web days, LiveJournals and AOL chat rooms were all about how people were participating in the conversation. They were about deeply engaged communities,” Bianchini saidin a recent interview “The current web is about broadcasting personal announcements into a world of feeds.”

Mightybell is a social networking site that may not be a direct competitor for Facebookjust yet, but if her idea catches on, we might see social networking take on more of a chat room feel than it is now. The site is geared to have small groups of people who all share common interests, such as a type of movie, or book clubs, or sports teams. The site has a sort of Tumblr-Pinterest combination look and feel to the place and it is completely free to sign up.

“The idea is that you can take something you saw on Tumblr or Pinterest and turn it into action," Bianchini said. "You can take inspiration or aspiration and turn it into a project that you’re probably already organizing today over email or text."

There is a sidebar on the page that will allow you to comment and discuss what you and others are sharing, as you are sharing it, allowing for more fluid discussions. In a world where social networking sites seemingly come and go all the time, it will be interesting to see if Mightybell can take the best of AOL and the best of Facebook (News - Alert) and mash them into a true success.
