WeChat, a mobile phone, text, and video messaging service, has revealed that it currently has more than 200 million active users. The multi-language supported application has doubled its users in six months.
WeChat provides multimedia communication through the convenience of using a mobile device. Application users can download the free app and send text messages, use the hold-to-talk voice-messaging feature, broadcast multiple text messages, send photos and videos, exchange contact information, and share their location.
The app also is integrated with Facebook (News - Alert), allowing users to register through their Facebook Connect accounts. The idea behind WeChat was to create an “all-in-one” application letting users do all of their communicating in one place. Since its launch in 2011, the app has really taken off.
Founder and CEO Pony Ma, spoke at the government-sponsored China Internet Conference saying that more Chinese users have taken hold of smart phones. Ma said more people are jumping onto the mobile trend.
“Mobile is great because it sticks to users whenever they go. Unlike PCs, mobile also has location features which bring about new industries such as O2O (online to offline) services,” said Ma.
Ma added that more than half of Tencent’s QQ users now log onto the service using mobile terminals that are available throughout the country.
In March of 2012, the company announced it had more than 100 million users. Since making the app available in iTunes, Google Play Store, and Marketplace for Windows Phone (News - Alert) – those numbers have doubled. In addition, the app generates more than 700 million location-based activities each day. Although these numbers are impressive, the company has plans to continue expanding.
Media manager of Nike Greater China, Vicky Huang, said the company wants to continue increasing its users. The company plans on releasing a new marketing strategy soon saying they want to “deepen the connection with consumers, from broadcasting to conversations; from ‘one too many’ as well as ‘one to one’. 2012 is definitely the year of WeChat.”
