First Put an SNG Truck in a Backpack, Then Put the Backpack on a Chip

TMCnet News

(Stamford, CT, USA – April 6, 2011) -- Developments in TV News coverage include a flood of new offerings over the last year in which Satellite News Gathering (SNG) trucks, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, are being supplemented by similar live video coverage capabilities provided by a camera, 3G/4G IP network aircards, and a computer, all in a backpack solution. These backpack solutions are much less expensive and lighter, weighing 25-40 pounds.

Now AVIWEST, a company based in Rennes, France, has taken the backpack solution and put it on a chip, thanks to an intense three-year effort. Despite the big improvements that the backpacks offer, they still generally require a computer and a battery which means weight, heat, and power requirements. Not so with a chip solution – almost no weight, heat, or power required. The AVIWEST device, the IBIS, weighs 1 ½ pounds, after including a small battery, and attaches directly to the camera.

AVIWEST then partnered with KenCast (News - Alert), Inc. which integrated its leading-edge, wireless IP Networking software for bonding, acceleration, error correction, and variable bit rate encoding into the IBIS solution. The result is a very lightweight solution, with state-of-the-art wireless 3G/4G IP networking capability. The IBIS has found rapid acceptance and is now used worldwide by scores of TV News crews for coverage of live breaking news events.

The latest version of the IBIS devise now boasts higher resolution, support for WiMAX (News - Alert) and LTE, and more. KenCast and AVIWEST will demonstrate the latest version of the IBIS device and the associated Studio Server appliance at NAB2011 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, April 11-14, in the KenCast booth, SU5302.  Anyone worldwide can watch the demonstrations at NAB2011.vazzt.com.

Erwan Gasc, CEO of AVIWEST, said “Our IBIS device is based on a powerful AVIWEST hardware platform embedding video professional interfaces and integrating a cutting-edge digital video compression technology.  Running on its long life embedded battery, the light system is able to stream down to the TV station a high quality live video through several bonded 3G & 4G IP networks, now with a very short latency allowing live interviews.”

“It will be very convenient for SNG trucks to carry IBIS devices and for every reporter to have one on the backseat of his car” said Bill Steele, CEO of KenCast, Inc. “Carriers everywhere are expanding their wireless IP Network coverage and increasing the bandwidth every year or two. We believe the future of TV News coverage is in the direction that AVIWEST has pioneered.”
