Welcome to TMCnet’s Live Streaming Coverage week in review. If you’re in the north east, chances are you’re getting ready for a little early-in-the-season snow, so sit back with a cup of cocoa and let’s look at this week’s news in live streaming coverage!
Caribbean telecommunications provider LIME tapped PeerApp this week for its UltraBand transparent caching platform. Thanks to the partnership, LIME can now deliver Internet content, including video and multimedia, with improved quality while reducing associated network congestion and costs, according to the report.
"Our subscribers demand the best possible quality for streaming video, audio and content services," said Patrick Bradd, chief technical officer, LIME, in a statement.
In other live streaming news, Ustream and Korea Telecom (News - Alert) joined forces to bring Ustream (News - Alert) Korea, of which Korea Telecom is investing $10 million.
“We are excited to continue to march toward our vision of bringing the Ustream service to Asia in a steadfast and unwavering manner over a long period of time,” John Ham, Ustream founder, commented in a blog post. “We thank our wonderful users and look forward to growing the Ustream service in Korea.”
Ustream will start the Korean portal in January 2012.
In Netflix news, it seems Netflix subscribers utilizing the streaming service are to blame for all the bandwidth use, a TMCnet report says. Analysis found that Netflix accounts for 32.7 percent of peak downstream traffic within fixed networks in the U.S, representing a relative increase of 10 percent since the spring. The news comes as a bit of a surprise because, thanks to Netflix’s ever-changing business model, they’ve seen a 600,000 drop in customers since July.
"Globally, Netflix will grow – the service is available in almost 50 countries and the company is aggressively pursuing licensing deals with locally-focused content – but in the United States specifically, we might have seen the peak," the report reads.
Tech-savvy opera fans will be happy to know that the Bolshoi Theater's gala reopening will be streamed via YouTube (News - Alert).
The opening gala, a performance of Glinka’s opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila,” may be viewed on the Bolshoi's YouTube channel.
“Fans around the world are looking forward to the reopening of the Bolshoi Theater after its reconstruction,” said Yury Khazanov of YouTube in a joint statement with the Bolshoi Theater.
