GENBAND Makes Adding RTC to Skype for Business Easy, Affordable

Adding video and voice to the free presence and IM capabilities of Skype for Business can be a pricey proposition. But GENBAND (News - Alert) says it offers a cost-effective way to do that.

That’s via its real time communications client for Skype for Business. It connected to the Skype for Business server for directory, IM, and presence access, but leverages users’ existing video and voice infrastructure. It also supports cloud-based deployments and offers federation to work with other applications.

That means businesses don’t have to buy premium Microsoft licenses and then spend more on new servers and system integration. Instead, they can use the GENBAND RTC Client for Skype for Business along with its WebRTC Gateway to integrate their existing SIP-based voice solution, or a GENBAND solution, with the desired Microsoft services. The whole solution is HTML5- and JavaScript-based, making it easy to integrate with third-party applications via GENBAND’s Web APIs.

“Now the industry is making major steps forward by delivering solutions that are built to enable rapid integration into the new web applications paradigm,” notes Phil Edholm (News - Alert) of PKE Consulting LLC in his column in the April issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine. “These solutions use what are called REST-based or RESTful interfaces that are very easy to invoke and program. With its Kandy (News - Alert) product set, GENBAND has delivered what could be called communications beans that can be added into an application to rapidly integrate WebRTC-based communications services into applications. These allow the addition of communications without having the traditional infrastructure.”

In other recent GENBAND news, the company late last month announced it has partnered with IBM (News - Alert) to provide customers and resellers with an integrated communications and collaboration solution running in the cloud. That offering integrates GENBAND’s Realtime Connections Client with IBM Connections Cloud. GENBAND’s Realtime Connections Client is a cloud-based solution that features chat, content management, PBX (News - Alert), presence, screen-sharing, and videoconferencing functionality, and the ability to escalate easily from one channel to another. IBM Connections Cloud features email, file sharing, instant messaging, online document editing, and Web conferencing.
