The machine-to-machine (M2M) industry is packed with news each week. A MarketsandMarkets report was released this week that predicts the growth of the M2M market to reach as high as $85.96 billion by the end of 2017. The rise in the machine-to-machine market is being credited in large part to the continued popularity of the cloud and smartphone markets. Another factor, according to the report, is that government agencies have even managed to aid the market, with several new regulatory rulings that have helped the market. Here are other top stories this week in the expanding industry.

To start the week off, IBM (News - Alert) and Vodafone announced they entered into a collaboration to combine mobile communications and cloud computing for the remote management of ‘smart home’ appliances. The two companies anticipate that this machine-to-machine initiative could allow consumers to use their smartphones for a variety of remote activities including viewing their home's utility consumption; controlling security, heating and lighting systems; and activating home appliances such as washing machines.

Xoriant Corporation, a software product engineering and product consulting services company, has introduced Device Monitr, a mobile app, to monitor and manage devices connected to Linksys (News - Alert) Smart Wi-Fi Routers, which is available through the Apple App Store. According to company officials, the app monitors Internet connected home devices such as game consoles, iPads, PCs, audio/video streaming players, etc and notifies users about their status. Users can enable or disable Internet connection to these devices on-the-go via their iPhones.

Axeda (News - Alert) Corp’s M2M Cloud Service has been named a 2011 ‘M2M Evolution Product of the Year’ by TMCnet. With the Axeda M2M Cloud Service, the company’s customers deliver innovative M2M solutions and optimize their business processes with data from their connected products. TMCnet recognized it for its unique ability to cut the cost and complexity out of connecting and managing products.

Another report this week revealed some other trends in the industry. A family locator service is one of the many benefits of a cell phone and GPS. Your teenager might hate you for using it, but the peace of mind you get will be worth the stare your kids give you before they walk out the door. According to a report from Berg Insight, locator services will see a big increase in the next four years from 16 million in 2011 to more than 70 million by 2016.
