Beijing Yupont Electric Power Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company in the smart grid and automated meter reading segments, has expanded its collaboration with Telit Wireless (News - Alert) Solutions - a provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services – in order to leverage Telit modules that will help improve smart grid in China.
Currently, China represents 70 percent of the Asian smart grid market. The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has been transmitting and distributing power in China since many years by leveraging various grid technologies offered by companies such as Beijing Yupont.
In November 2011, SGCC offered a contract worth more than 70 million dollar to Beijing Yupont. Yupont won praise from experts and competitors for the AMR solution proposed in the SGCC tender. That was SGCC’s first open-tender for AMR products, according to sources.
Incubated by the North China Electric Power Research Institute, Beijing Yupont is engaged in the development of electric power metering and automatic meter reading technologies, geographical information systems (GIS), electric power meter, and load control terminal products.
Telit has been a technology and expert partner to Yupont, since 2009. It has been contributing to technical aspects of Yupont product development and also helping Yupont to accelerate development of the intelligent power grid market.
The recent expansion initiative between Telit and Yupont was based on the success of initial collaborative efforts that resulted in Beijing Yupont being awarded the supply contract by SGCC.
SGCC’s first open-tender for AMR products included Beijing Yupont’s two products, namely the SGC (News - Alert) Concentrator System and the FKGA4X System, which both leverage Telit’s technology solutions.
The SGC intelligent concentrator is a wireless reading system, which was researched and developed by Yupont for SGCC. It collects data from handheld devices and terminals, thereby improving work efficiency, eliminating human errors and ensuring the accuracy and scientific validity of the data. In addition, it facilitates managers to detect conditions such as power line loss.
While the FKGA4X System, which has Telit GL868-DUAL embedded in it, integrates modern convergent technologies into the electric energy metering, and power marketing segments. It supports GPRS, CDMA, SMS, optical fiber network, and other communications modes.
As part of GC864 product family, Telit GL868-DUAL, is one of the smallest GSM/GPRS quad-band modules with industrial connectors in the market. Supporting the GPRS, CDMA, SMS, optical fiber network, and other communications modes, its applications are in electric energy metering technology and the power marketing technology.
As one of the platforms for M2M solutions, Telit GL868-DUAL has integrated TCP/IP protocol stack and serial multiplexer.
Dominikus Hierl, chief marketing officer at Telit Wireless Solutions said in a statement, “The Telit GL868-DUAL embedded in the FKGA4X makes it possible to run the Yupont‘s application inside the module, thus making it one of the smallest most complete platforms for m2m solutions currently in use in China.”
