Advancements in technology have led us to smartphones, tablets and machines that communicate with machines. Machine to Machine (M2M) technology is taking society by storm, with innovations, improvements and implementations of the technology every day. Here are the top stories from the week.

Two things we thought we would never see together came together this week as Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) and MEDRIA partnered up to enable cows to text. That’s right; thanks to M2M technology and monitoring solutions by MEDRIA, farmers are notified automatically via text message from special sensors that measure a cow’s vital data. The result is a higher reproduction rate for the herd, while avoiding emergencies means less stress and more profit for the farmer.

WABCO is a company that strives to set the transport industry’s standard for vehicle safety and efficiency. For its unique culture of telematic innovations and for its TrailerGUARD telematics system, it won the Telematik Award 2010, the Trailer Innovation award 2011 and most recently, the 2012 Telematics Award in the category of logistics and cargo. With TrailerGUARD, drivers will always know the condition of their trailer’s parts: Telematic data appears via an application programming interface (API) and vehicle data come visible via the fleet management system.

Also this week, Jari Arkko, Internet architect at Ericsson (News - Alert) Research, is displaying his ‘connected home’ at the company’s research labs at Stockholm. His system is based on sensors in different gadgets like washing machine or the toaster that trigger off algorithms that send a message to say Facebook (News - Alert) events feed to notify of an event like dried laundry or that the toaster has finished the task and gone off.

Rapidly transforming socio-economic scenarios across the globe have been throwing new challenges before the Police and law enforcement agencies every day, and the latest technological advancements and innovations are helping them in successfully addressing these issues. Over-C, a provider of Near Field Communication or ‘NFC’ mobile applications to global organizations who need to share information and data with remote workers in real-time, has joined hands with Concirrus andTelenor Connexion to develop specialized communications solutions that will enable effective tracking of police speed boats.

Last but not least, Beijing Yupont Electric Power Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company in the smart grid and automated meter reading segments, has expanded its collaboration with Telit Wireless (News - Alert) Solutions, a provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services, in order to leverage Telit modules that will help improve smart grid in China.

To stay up to date on the latest innovations, announcements and resources related to M2M, be sure to check back to the machine to machine community each week!
