Machine to machine (M2M) solutions enable two-way communication between wireless and wired devices without the need for human interference, becoming prominent a variety of industries and uses such as healthcare, fleet management, connected homes, connected cars and network monitoring and control.

Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) recently signed a nearly double-digit million euro contract with arviem of Switzerland, a cargo monitoring service provider, to offer a real-time monitoring solution for freight consignments. The agreement is an important building block for expanding Deutsche Telekom’s business in M2M-based communication.

The service provider’s M2M solutions allow users to monitor, localize, control and maintain their devices and assets.

The M2M solution allows users to rent a tracking system per freight consignment, offering flexible use of hardware that is not built into the container. The device incorporates several sensors that record ambient conditions such as temperature, humidity or vibrations and it localizes the container’s position to within 30 meters by GPS. Customers can specify in advance what events they want to be informed of – such as whether a container has been opened in shipping or is taking a route that differs from the one that was scheduled – and the M2M solution relays the data required via the mobile network. Software then processes the information and sends it to the customer by e-mail or on a Web-based dashboard.

“We rely on strong partners in order to be able to offer a wide range of solutions and services for different industries and application scenarios. Cooperation with arviem is an important milestone in this process,” said Jürgen Hase, head of Deutsche Telekom’s M2M Competence Center.

Deutsche Telekom is providing the hardware and SIM cards and arviem is providing the software solution that evaluates the data collected.
