Hotel occupancy rates fluctuate dramatically throughout the year, experiencing high volumes of vacancies that challenge long-term sustainability. In order to differentiate themselves hotels go out of their way to provide the best available service using any resource available to them. With technology permeating every aspect of our lives, hotels also want to ensure the same conveniences are available when their guests book a room. The Room Operations Center (ROC) from Evolve Controls is designed to provide an in-room control system administered through Microsoft (News - Alert) Azure cloud platform.

The ROC platform is the next generation of in-room control systems that allows guests and hotel staff to manage the in-room experience. With this system it is possible to have complete control of the lights, thermostats, television, window treatments as well as other specialized applications specific to the hotel.

The platform is designed to allow access levels with different permissions to staffs in the hotel so they can only control the functionality available to them. Property managers can add users such as front desk, housekeeping, engineering administration and more for 3 users per role, but ROC allows for unlimited numbers.

The ROC module brings together the in-room device network with the company's cloud infrastructure using Microsoft Azure to communicate wirelessly in each guest room. The Azure platform ensures the system is protected by regularly updating the application as well as using multiple layers of encryption and redundancy to protect sensitive data on the network.

"Evolve's ROC platform takes a forward-looking approach; it's 100 percent cloud-based and uses completely open architecture for the purpose of easy system integration. In addition, it provides automatic, over-the-air additions and updates to software features and security, so the system's value actually increases over time instead of becoming obsolete said Chris Pieper, Evolve's director of programs.

Having a cloud-based platform delivered through a Software as a Service (SaaS (News - Alert)) model removes the burden of managing an on-premise IT infrastructure in the hotel, which can be expensive and time-consuming. This lowers the CapEx/ OpEx costs as the organization expands services within one or multiple locations.

The in-room Evolve AI Tablet provides:

  • Internet-synchronized clock with dual alarm clocks, configurable alarm sounds, and wake-up scheduling
  • Weather, news and sports headlines
  • Environmental control – lighting, thermostat, shades
  • Hotel concierge services – amenities, directories, menus
  • Supports Bluetooth 2.1 wireless technology, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi (WEP/WPA/WPA2), and Z-Wave – Signal (Frequency) 908.42 MHz networks

"By leveraging the powerful capabilities and flexibility of the Azure platform, Evolve's ROC solution is really changing the landscape of the connected guest room. Enabling customers to innovate is core to Microsoft's 'cloud-first, mobile-first' strategy. We are delighted Evolve has chosen Azure as the platform to bring this solution to market," said Vibhor Kapoor, director, product marketing, Microsoft Azure.
