Microsoft Quietly Rolls Out another Update to Lync Server 2013

Microsoft (News - Alert) quietly rolled out an update to Lync Server 2013 over the weekend, fixing no fewer than 13 bugs and adding support for Windows Server 2012 R2.

Users can enable the new feature by deploying a pervious update to Lync Server 2013.

The next iteration of Lync is scheduled to be released in the second quarter of 2014. The upcoming version of Lync may feature enterprise voice support akin to Microsoft's Skype (News - Alert) product, according to EyeOnWindows.

Microsoft has been rolling out updates to its Lync Server products at a rapid pace — a nice change to the traditionally unhurried product line. The company issued an update to its Lync 2013 mobile clients in mid-October. Those updates added support for Lync Server Certificate Authentication or Passive Authentication, letting customers build secure support for mobile devices right into their environment. The update also allows for saved credentials for mobile clients, letting businesses choose between requiring a password and not on their mobile clients.

Microsoft also updated its Lync client apps on Windows Phone (News - Alert), iPhone and iPad. The update lets mobile users easily join and participate in a Lync Meeting without registering a Lync account and conduct video meetings from a mobile device with multiple participants.

All this has been building towards a large, unified, communications medium. The Redmond-based company's acquisition of Yammer, a corporate-level instant messaging client-cum-social network, resulted in a massive boom in users, putting its active user base over eight million.

Integrating all of these disparate parts into Lync over the next few years could provide Microsoft with a more compelling service — one which lets users access private information from different locations — for medium to enterprise-level businesses.

Microsoft had promised to update Lync on a regular basis in the past, and now, it seems, its users are starting to see the fruits of that promise.
