xGs Mobile VoIP Solution Challenges Cellular Status Quo

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

With mobile VoIP continuing to grow in popularity as more and more users look to reduce calling rates, there is a potential threat to operator revenues that has many in the industry wondering if survival is possible.

One analyst with Stratecast, a division of IT market research firm Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert), recently told TMCnet in an interview that for carriers focusing strictly on connectivity, this development can be a highly destructive one.

According to Mike Jude, program manager for Stratecast, “By undercutting voice services that carriers provide, VoIP providers like Skype (News - Alert) and other industry players, challenge the revenue streams that would justify deployment in the first place.”

To help carriers grab some hold of the mobile VoIP marketplace, xG Technology (News - Alert) offers a mobile VoIP solution that challenges the cellular “status quo.”

The company has developed xMax, an all-IP system infrastructure that is similar to Vonage (News - Alert) or Skype, but in the form of a fully mobile handset that doesn’t require the use and extra cost of a computer or broadband Internet connection.

To further drive down costs, xMax technology uses an unlicensed portion of the radio spectrum that has long been thought unsuitable for cell phone use.

According to Chris Whiteley (News - Alert), director of business development for xG Technology, “Providers who deploy xMax networks can aggressively compete with national carriers by offering customers a suite of services that avoid incumbent networks.”
