xG Technology’s (

Alert) xMax Mobile VoIP solution holds the potential for real savings for consumers on their mobile phone bills. With consumers relying more-and-more on mobile voice and data services in their lives, strain on the nation’s cellular networks is increasing. As a result, a strong push to free up more radio spectrum to meet the rising demand has evolved.
A top concern about this move is that merely freeing up additional spectrum will not encourage competition in the cellular industry, nor lead to savings for consumers.
According to officials with xG, the company’s xMax solution is a low-cost, mobile VoIP and data communications system that operates in the unlicensed 900MHz frequency band. By operating in this spectrum, which was previously considered unusable for mobile services, xMax opens the door to a new breed of competitive carriers.
The FCC (

There is now a growing interest in using free spectrum solutions, such as white spaces and unlicensed airwaves to foster competition and bring lower costs to consumers.
Chris Whiteley (

For consumers, that means “more provider choices and lower costs for wireless services,” Whiteley said.
