The global payment company, Adyen, has issued a statement saying that Shuttle will now be available in the European Union; the statement was issued separately at conferences in Amsterdam, Berlin and London.

With the launch of Shuttle in Europe, retailers will be able to accept Chip and Pin payments on mobile point-of-sale devices.

Shuttle meets all the Europay, MasterCard (News - Alert) and Visa (EMV) requirements needed to accept credit cards and debit cards. Adyen currently accepts online and mobile payments from customers and will now be accepting point-of-sale payments, all of which will go to a single administration office.

Shuttle is a mobile point-of-sale device designed to connect with Android and iOS (Apple (News - Alert)) phones and tablets through a Bluetooth connection. The Chip and Pin system requires users to enter a pin code, rather than the older swipe, and sign systems based on a magnetic stripe located on the back of credit cards and debit cards.

The Chip and Pin system uses a microchip located on the card and is verified by a Personal Identification Number (PIN) selected by the customer that is unique to them.

An added feature of the Shuttle is that once the transaction is completed, results from the transaction appear on both the merchant’s device and the customer’s mobile device. In addition to this, a receipt of the transaction is sent via e-mail to the customer, which makes losing a receipt less of a possibility.

The completed transaction as also sent back to Adyen offices for processing.

Pieter van der Does, chief executive officer at Adyen, Pieter van der Does, calls Shuttle a “natural extension” of the company’s online and mobile payment solution, “bringing Internet technology to the point-of-sale and providing complete integration across all sales channels.”

Shuttle, he says, is consistent with the way Europeans like to pay; “With more and more purchases being made online and using mobile devices, merchants are rethinking their approach to face-to-face commerce. Chip & PIN is how Europe pays, and with Shuttle, Adyen provides a cost-effective, high-performance MPOS device that enables consumers to transact the way they are used to, using any card."
