These days, commercial air travel can be something of an ordeal. But JetBlue is out to make the process a little bit easier with its new mobile app, introducing several new features. One of the newly-released features is the mobile boarding pass, a development that will likely prove welcome for JetBlue passengers.

The mobile boarding passes won't be available everywhere, sadly, but for the passengers in eight of JetBlue's largest cities – San Juan, San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Boston and Orlando – customers can download electronic boarding passes. This saves plenty of time, effort and paper throughout the entire process, including at check-in and the various security checkpoints.

Those interested will have to download the new JetBlue mobile app version 2.0 on iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod Touch systems, which will then be displayed as an encrypted barcode. TSA security, meanwhile, can simply scan the barcode to validate the boarding pass, saving plenty of time.

Users can also purchase the Even More Speed security offering to further ease their passage through security.

But the revamped app isn't just about boarding passes, as useful a service as that would be on its own. JetBlue's new app adds the ability to book flights with TrueBlue reward points, access to several flight schedules, a set of terminal maps to make finding the way to desired points in the terminal easier, a selection of city guides complete with weather forecasts in daily and hourly flavors, and a new postcard tool complete with JetBlue tailfin patterns.

JetBlue has even enlisted passengers to design its next tablet app.

While there are certainly plenty of new, valuable features added to the JetBlue app, the clear front of the line here is the mobile boarding system – a move which, according to JetBlue's vice president of customer connections Michael Stromer, will make JetBlue not only a better alternative for customers, but a leaner company overall, and a more environmentally sound operation as well by dint of less paper used in the overall operation.

JetBlue plans further expansion of its mobile boarding operations throughout 2013, making them accessible to more cities.

With commercial air traveling suffering of late due to a perfect storm of a weak economy, increasing gas prices, and security that many consider an ordeal, companies like JetBlue are going to be hard pressed to make the value of their service more readily apparent to users.

Providing a way to get through the boarding process more easily is definitely a great start, though only time will tell if it has sufficient impact to keep people flying JetBlue.

Still, it's impossible to fault a company that's making a clear effort toward keeping its customer base happy, and JetBlue is certainly out to do that much. Not only is it looking to provide a better experience in the airport, but its app also looks to provide a better experience out of the airport as well, and that makes the whole affair a much better value overall.
