NXT-ID has partnered with Voice of Bigdata to distribute its 3D FaceMatch biometric identification systems in India. When distributed, Voice of Bigdata will be the first company to offer facial recognition software in India.
"Clearly, this is another milestone in our history as we continue to make solid progress as we implement our growth strategy," Gino Pereira, chief executive officer of NXT-ID, Inc., said in a statement. "We are delighted to be partnering with VOBD in such an exciting developing market. India is at the forefront of the biometric revolution and with our combined expertise in 3D facial recognition and the ability to analyze large amounts of data very quickly I believe we can contribute substantially to biometric adoption here."
Facial recognition software can work in a few ways, but the elements are simple: acquire the facial features, image, and the shape of a person's head in three dimensions to verify a person's identity. If works, and works well, it could enhance, or replace, manual photo ID verification.
It's been a technology that major firms, from Apple to Facebook and Google (News - Alert), have been chasing after for some time. Most commercial uses are limited to recognizing a person's visage in photos, not security.
Facial recognition as a security method could be desirable for some, though privacy concerns will likely need to be addressed before it's accepted by consumers. If it does take off, it could be the most efficient two-step verification method — the process of verifying an identity by checking something a user knows (like a password) and something the user has (like a face, or a fingerprint).
The 3D FaceMatch system will be melded into Voice of Bigdata's current facial recognition offerings in its security and intelligence divisions. The technology will be marketed towards retail markets, law enforcement, airports, government agencies and other public and private organizations.
