While it may not come as much of a surprise that digital tickets are becoming a huge market, the fact that a large portion of that market is going mobile could raise some eyebrows. A new study by Juniper Research (News - Alert) claims that global ticket purchases are going to reach 32 billion by the end of 2019. That would be a significant increase from the estimated 16.2 billion purchases that will take place this year. More impressive than those numbers is that the same study found that mobile platforms will make up about half of all digital ticket purchases.
Some people are buying quite a few digital tickets when it comes to sporting events, but transportation tickets, especially when dealing with bus travel, is dominating the market right now. Mobile phone usage appears to especially fit this particular sector in the digital ticket market.
The study also found that bus ticketing is gaining quite a bit of traction when it comes to barcodes that are sent through both smartphone apps and SMS based services. Europe in particular is seeing a big time growth in this market. Juniper believes that with the rise of wearable technology such as the Apple Watch getting all kinds of new apps, a kind of wearable ticketing service won’t be far behind.
Juniper does point out that before people will feel comfortable wearing their tickets on their wrists, the technology for devices like the Apple (News - Alert) Watch will need to be refined. Battery life is a big obstacle, especially when it comes to a device like Apple’s that can operate for as little as 6 hours before needing a full recharge.
While bus ticketing was the key focus of this report, Juniper also found out interesting facts such as the revelation that one in three airline boarding passes will be issued using mobile devices by 2019. Apple Pay is also expected to be a driver when it comes to mobile payment of tickets in a number of different markets.
