The IBM (News - Alert) MobileFirst line has been something we've been hearing about for some time now, but now, the reality of it all has arrived thanks to the first wave of IBM MobileFirst apps hitting availability. With the arrival of said apps comes an array of new tools for a host of different industries, and a whole new value proposition for businesses looking to bring in more of a mobile workforce operation.

With the new apps, users from the banking and retail industries to the insurance and telecommunications industries, and even governments and airlines, get access to a variety of new functions available from standard Apple (News - Alert) devices, and the reaction so far has already been brisk. Already several IBM clients have announced support for these new solutions, including Air Canada, Banorte, Citi and Sprint (News - Alert), showing just how full the range of support on these apps actually goes.

Several apps were included in the new array, including things like Plan Flight, a tool that allows pilots to view flight schedules, flight plans, and crew manifests, allowing for better decisions about discretionary fuel use, which will hopefully mean less fuel consumed overall and more costs saved for airlines. Also on hand is Advise & Grow, a financial app that allows bank and investment personnel to get secure access to client profiles, the information from which can be used in turn to provide better recommendations about future planning and gather more information from there. Retention, meanwhile, is geared toward the insurance field and provides access to customer profiles as well as a combined risk score, backed up by alerts and reminders.

Governments, meanwhile, can benefit from Case Advice and Incident Aware (News - Alert). Case Advice offers adjustments of case priorities based on a series of analytics, allowing government workers to be more efficient as a result. Incident Aware gives law enforcement a new tool that offers area history and geographical information, along with a better ability to call in backup when needed. Even retail has something in the new IBM MobileFirst apps, with Sales Assist to use customer profiles to know just what to offer users, and Pick & Pack to help translate back-end inventory systems into order fulfillment mechanisms, helping to ensure that what's on the floor is what's in the store.

It's clear that there's plenty going on here, and IBM MobileFirst is going to offer up plenty of value for businesses looking to take a more mobile stance on things. Just the financial advising and insurance apps alone are clear winners; representatives in said industries no longer need a central office to function, and can instead proceed directly to the homes of potential clients, offering valuable advice right across the kitchen table. That saves a lot of overhead in terms of property, plant and equipment costs, and the savings can be passed on to customers. While it may not mean the end of offices for all concerned, it can mean reductions in such expenses. That's valuable for most any industry out there.

As IBM MobileFirst starts to settle in, it's likely to pose some exciting new challenges and opportunities alike for the businesses that put such a system to use. It will be interesting to see just what those are as time goes by, and should prove ultimately to offer major changes in the way such businesses work. IBM and Apple may be about to lead something of a mobile revolution here, and that's an exciting proposition on its own.
