SARA-U260 dual-band 3G/2G module from u-blox (News - Alert) has received "AT&T network compatible" status.

As a provider of wireless and positioning semiconductors and modules, Swiss-based u-blox is uniquely positioned to help OEMs develop innovative solutions that enable quickly deployable mobility both quickly and cost-effectively.

The SARA-U260 dual-band 3G/2G module from u-blox provides mobile connectivity in a miniature 16 x 26 mm2 LGA form factor. It is pin-compatible with u-blox’s SARA-G3 GSM/GPRS modules. It is layout-compatible with LISA-U2 (HSPA) and TOBY-L2 LTE (News - Alert) modules as well to support future-proof 4G LTE designs.

With certification from AT&T, manufacturers would be able to integrate SARA-U260 modems into machine to machine (M2M) devices operating over AT&T (News - Alert)'s 3G network in the USA. Typical applications include small tracking boxes, usage-based insurance devices, smart metering, wearable electronics, as well as connected fitness watches, cited u-blox.

Moreover, similar form-factor and footprint of all SARA modules facilitate engineers to develop one hardware/software platform to support GSM/GPRS, HSPA, or LTE, depending on their end customer requirements.

Complemented with the aforementioned feature, the SARA-U260 hosts multiple embedded IP protocols, such as TCP/IP, UDP (News - Alert)/IP, HTTP, and FTP.  In addition, low power consumption makes the module ideal for battery-powered and handheld devices.

Apart from providing full voice and data capability as well as a full suite of IP protocol stacks, the module is also ideal for applications that still need roaming ability with 2G using AT&T's 3G network coverage. Its features have been selected to give customers specific features they require for telematics units, handheld devices, communications modules, point-of-sale terminals, vehicle "black boxes" and utility meters.

"u-blox is proud that AT&T certified our SARA-U260 module for its network," said Nikolaos Papadopoulos, president of u-blox America, said in a statement. "Our robust voice and data modules deliver powerful 3G connectivity with 2G fallback in the smallest package on the market, at a price that customers recently paid for a 2G module."

Recently, u-blox was honored by M2M Evolution magazine with 'Product of the Year' award for its SARA-U2 UMTS/HSPA module series.
