An announcement was made by EdgeCast Networks, provider of fast and reliable content delivery network or CDN, that significant gains in site delivery times have been achieved by Automattic, the creators of WordPress.com and Technorati. Both of these reputed companies deal with publishing, hosting, and discovery of user-generated content, with the use of EdgeCast global network. With the use of EdgeCast, a dramatic improvement in site loading and response times in 18 global metropolitan areas is seen.
There will be nearly 50 percent increase in the number of people publishing their own online content over a period of 5 years ending 2013. This is close to a 200 percent annual growth in video, blogs and other social networking participation. This explosive growth will put unprecedented strain on servers and the Internet. With very slow and unresponsive sites, at times it is impossible for users to reach the publishing server.
WordPress.com can ensure that its millions of bloggers can reach the site quickly regardless of their location using the EdgeCast network. Response times are improved considerably when compared to serving content from a single location over the Internet.
According to Paul Kim, VP, User Growth, Automattic, WordPress.com has become a popular blogging platform as it has made blogging accessible to regular people. Kim added, "Equally important to the user experience is accessibility in a more literal sense - serving content quickly to readers and making sure our millions of publishers can always access their blogs without worrying about Internet congestion or overloaded servers. EdgeCast has made lightning-fast load times possible for our millions of users around the world."
Technorati indexes millions of blog posts in real time and hence requires extraordinary speed. Technorati has improved its site loading time and increased user loyalty by leveraging the EdgeCast Network.
Shani Higgins, GM, media, Technorati said, "As we've grown, so too has our editorial mission. We not only help readers find the content they are looking for, but we also provide our own original content on a wide range of subjects." Higgins added that fractions of seconds also count when vying for audience. With the use of EdgeCast, a considerable impact on the user experience is provided with the site's loading time faster by a few seconds.
