Innovium Takes Multi-gigabit Ethernet to New Levels with Teralynx Chips

Multi-gigabit Ethernet of 10 Gb/sec and 100 Gb/sec have evolved slowly as the industry and bodies of standardization come to terms with the rules and regulations for the technology. But as the creation and consumption of data continue to grow at an alarming rate, hyperscale data centers and cloud builders need speeds beyond 100 Gb/sec and even 200 Gb/sec. For these organizations, 400 Gb/sec is what is required, and while the technology is not slated for deployment beyond 2020 by most companies, Innovium is looking to deliver 400 Gb/sec next year with its Teralynx chip.

As reported by Timothy Prickett Morgan on The Next Platform, the founders of Innovium bring a lot of experience and $90 million in three rounds of venture funding to move their agenda forward. The co-founder of the company and CEO Rajiv Khemani told Morgan that the company is addressing the cloud and hyperscale market, which is worth about 2 billion just for ASICs.

The push for multi-gigabit Ethernet to the 400 Gb/sec is being driven by company personnel with extensive experience at Intel (News - Alert), Cavium and Broadcom in the development of high capacity chips, which has led to Teralynx.

As explained to Morgan, Khemani said, “Everybody wants high bandwidth and low latency, especially at the top of rack where the switch is a single point of failure inside of a rack of servers. If a top of rack goes down, that is 40 to 80 servers that are down, and that is a big pain point for them. So they want higher uptime, higher bandwidth, and lower latency as the traffic is traveling inside the datacenter and to customers. And the largest data centers want lower energy and they want simplicity and automation so they can lower operational expenses.”

The Innovium Teralynx Ethernet switch silicon family provides industry-leading analytics, rich standards-based programmability and power efficiency to deliver the highest performance and most scalable data center networking solution. According to the company, this will give data centers the multi-gigabit Ethernet capacity to dominate the IT infrastructure as artificial intelligence,  machine learning, micro-services based applications, distributed storage using flash/NVMe over fabric, mobile/cloud/video/XaaS and big data analytics continue to drive data center traffic growth.

With traffic within large scale data centers set to quintuple by 2020, multi-gigabit Ethernet will be a crucial part of managing this explosive growth effectively.

The Teralynx platform is designed from the ground up to address the needs of large data centers with patent pending innovations, and, according to the company, with the most scalable single-chip performance from 3.2Tbps to 12.8Tbps, broadest connectivity and radix, breakthrough telemetry and automation, highest buffer size, best-in-class latency and power efficiency.

Target (News - Alert) markets include: data center networking infrastructure for cloud, enterprise, high-performance compute and service providers; top-of-rack, leaf and spine switches in the data centers; and fixed or modular switches using single or multi-chip configurations.
