Ethernet has long been a staple of the enterprise. From the data center to a company’s campus network, Ethernet serves to enable operations. However, as a result of innovation in the cloud and the Saasy reality of today, Ethernet is not enough. Demands require modernizations and multi-gigabit Ethernet – when 1G won’t cut it, time to move to 2.5G or 5G. And with the weekend upon us, there’s no better time than the present to take a look at the week that was in multi-gigabit Ethernet: Time for the Week in Review!

We started the week with a report from TMC’s (News - Alert) Paula Bernier on how the IEEE is working toward broader use for 802.3. It is no longer just an enterprise option. The IoT is expected to play a large role in the expansion of adoption. And for now, the IEEE (News - Alert) and the IEEE Standards Association are working to identify and address the development of standards needed to support expanded use of IEEE 802.3. Bernier’s complete insight and analysis is HERE.

Abaco Systems announced its 3U OpenVPX single-board computer called the SBC367D this week. The new release enables the development of high-performance embedded computing systems in the 3U VPX form factor as a result of the solution’s 40G Ethernet support. “This new 40 Gigabit-capable single board computer strengthens our mission-ready systems capability, and also responds to our customers’ growing preference for Ethernet as their backplane technology of choice in developing high-performance systems,” noted Mrinal Iyengar, vice president of product management at Abaco Systems. Everything you need to know is HERE.

The need for speed in networking is tangible, and Cavium’s new FastlinQ Ethernet adapter offers a throughput of 200G and is better suited to support cloud-based and NFV operations. Cavium's manager of the Ethernet adapter group and vice president Rajneesh Gaur noted, “This groundbreaking performance combined with the intelligence and offload capabilities of our FastLinQ family of 25/100Gb Ethernet Adapters empowers NFV and cloud platforms to deliver exceptional levels of service and application processing, while offloading packet I/O.” TMC’s Steve Anderson has all the details HERE.

Remember to stop by early and often for all things multi-gig Ethernet. See you next week!
