More than 700 million Power over Ethernet switch ports will ship in the next five years. During that same time frame, some 280 million Power over Ethernet devices, including endpoints such as cameras, lights, voice over IP phones, and wireless access points, will be delivered to customers, according to the Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group.

To ensure that these and other Power over Ethernet products are interoperable with each other, the Ethernet Alliance has launched a Power over Ethernet certification program. This program will certify that Power over Ethernet products meet the IEEE’s (News - Alert) 802.3 PoE standards.

Power over Ethernet technology safely transfers electrical power, along with data, to remote devices over standard data cables in an Ethernet network. The total number of Power over Ethernet device and port shipments is expected to reach nearly 1 billion by 2021, according to the Ethernet Alliance (News - Alert).

“The impact of PoE technologies cuts across multiple markets, from enterprise IT, to network operations, to home automation, and this trend looks to continue,” says John D'Ambrosia, chairman of the Ethernet Alliance, and a senior principal engineer at Huawei (News - Alert). “The presence of the Ethernet Alliance logo will clearly identify products that are IEEE 802.3 standards-based and that provide the performance and interoperability assurance end users want from their PoE investments.”

Testing as part of the program is slated to begin in August. A certification event is also in the planning, and will take place in October at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab, a more than 4,200 square foot facility in Durham.

In its other work related to Power over Ethernet, the Ethernet Alliance is introducing a PoE membership class. That will be a means through which companies can participate in the certification program. And it will provide them with other member-only benefits.
