Marvell (News - Alert) has come out with a new transceiver that will enable enterprises to migrate to multi-gigabit Ethernet networking infrastructure more quickly and cost effectively.

It’s called the Alaska M 88E2180 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver. And Marvell says it’s the world’s first octal multi-Gigabit Ethernet transceiver compatible with both the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3bz standard and the NBASE-T Alliance specification for 2.5 and 5 gbps operation over CAT5e cables.

This is just one example of many new product introductions in the gigabit Ethernet arena. There’s a lot of activity around gigabit Ethernet as of late.

For example, last month Abaco Systems came out with a new gigabit Ethernet switch. The NETernity SWE440 3U VPX 10/40 enables a range of components, including digital signal processors, graphics cards, sensor I/O cards, single board computers, and other gear to pass data at multi-gigabit speeds. It’s a good match for such applications as electronic warfare, radar/sonar, situational awareness, and surveillance.

And earlier this year the 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium – which was established to help enable and promote 25 and 50 gigabit per second Ethernet standardization – held a plugfest at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab in Durham. The aim was to demonstrate interoperability and to uncover data corruption, interoperability, and protocol interpretation challenges to interoperability.

Sixteen companies participated, bringing such products to the event as adapters, interconnects, switches, test and measurement devices. They worked on auto negotiation, comprehensive benchmarking, data integrity, and stress-testing.

“In order to handle the increasing amount of data, server architectures all too often require multiple 10G ports. 25G Ethernet arrives just in time and has started its climb towards dominance as the leading server-to-ToR switch interconnect,” said Vittal Balasubramanian, chair of the 25G/50G Ethernet Interop (News - Alert) Committee and Principal Signal Integrity Engineer at Dell.

25/50 and 100 gigabit per second Ethernet is forecast to surpass other Ethernet solutions (like 10gbps and 40gbps) as the most deployed by next year, according to Crehan Research.

“The ramp of 25GbE shipments is off to a stellar start, driven by compelling pricing and rapid, broad ecosystem alignment, as well as new data center application bandwidth requirements,” Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research, said in a statement the firm issued in late May. “Looking at the broader high-speed networking adoption arcs, we are seeing an acceleration in adoption as customers move to stay ahead of numerous network traffic demands including big data and related analytics, a rapidly growing and changing mobile Internet, network function[s] virtualization, machine learning, and augmented and virtual reality.”
