Industry events offer much in the way of opportunity. From networking and meeting perspective clients, to education and insight into technology’s now with forecasts for the future as well, this is the time to show off. Computex took place last week, and served as the platform for much in the way of innovation and opportunity. One trend gaining momentum, which took center stage at Computex, is 10GbE products. Yes, 2.5G and 5G are currently the typical network modernization, but as more 10G products come to market its adoption will grow.

One such product spotlighted the multi-gigabit Ethernet movement, AKiTiO’s Thunderbolt 3 to 10GBase-T Adapter.

The AKiTiO adapter will be available later on in 2017, with pricing and its exact specifications unclear at this time. As far as the adapter’s “guts” go, what is known is that it has quite a simple architecture: a 10GbE controller from an unknown vendor, a Thunderbolt 3 controller from Intel and a programmable microcontroller. We can speculate as to whether or not the product leverages an Aquantia (News - Alert) reference and/or chip design but, considering Aquantia demonstrated a reference design, I know where my money would be if I were a betting man – which I am.

The solution supports several speeds: 10GBAse-T and NBASE-T, and can work in 2.5GBase-T and 5GBase-T networks, to name a few. The adapter is targeting small businesses and consumers; it could certainly support a hardcore gaming habit or a startup’s SaaS applications.

For a device that isn’t much larger than an iPhone (News - Alert), it packs quite a punch. In a world where bigger is always better, when it comes to technology, this is not necessarily the case. With groups like the NBASE-T Alliance and the like providing a pulpit and guidance for the future of multi-gigabit networking, this recent showcase is simply the tip of the iceberg.
