NETGEAR's New Multi-Gigabit AP Features MU-MIMO

NETGEAR has come out with a new solution called the ProSAFE Premium 802.11ac 4x4 Wave 2 Wireless Access Point (News - Alert). This is the latest addition to NETGEAR’s 802.11ac product line.
The ProSAFE Premium 802.11ac 4x4 Wave 2 Wireless Access Point is a controller-managed solution that can support a variety of applications, including video streaming. It can deliver total throughput of up to 2.3 gigabits per second. And it can operate either with two bonded 1G Ethernet connections or with its single multi-gigabit 2.5G Ethernet port.
Multi-gigabit Ethernet has been available for well over a decade. But, as Network World (News - Alert) reported earlier this year in this article, the NBASE-T Alliance has been developing specifications and products for multi-gigabit applications including Wi-Fi access points as well as other solutions like Ethernet switches, network attached storage, PC adapter cards, and testers. The NBASE-T Alliance, which was formed by Aquantia (News - Alert), Cisco, and others, is working to help optimize transmission rates and address traffic bottlenecks in multi-gigabit Ethernet environments.
This new NETGEAR offering also employs MU-MIMO technology. MU-MIMO stands for multi-user, multiple-input, multiple-output. It enables a Wi-Fi router to communicate simultaneously with multiple devices. That decreases the time devices have to wait for a signal. And it can lead to dramatically faster networks.
