Lancaster County Upgrade Leverages Aviat's Microwave
July 20, 2017
Lancaster County, Penn., is using technology from Aviat (News - Alert) Networks Inc. to power its upgraded public safety network, the company revealed this week. That technology is the IRU 600 microwave platform.
With this solution, Lancaster County moves from legacy, time division multiple access technology to newer Ethernet/IP technology. That will enable it to increase reliability, reuse existing antennas, and save money, according to Aviat Networks, which will also provide design and installation services for the project.
"As first responders demand high speed broadband communications, mission critical networks require upgrades," states Michael Pangia (News - Alert), president and CEO of Aviat Networks. "With the use of advanced technology such as the IRU 600, state and local governments can deliver seamless upgrades to support the next generation of public safety applications while lowering total cost of ownership."
Aviat Networks says the IRU 600 is based on extra high power radio technology. In May, the company more than doubled the over-the-air capacity of the solution. That includes the introduction of the RAC70 radio card, enabling 1024QAM and 60/80MHz wide channels to maximize capacity in the 6 and 1GHz frequency bands.
The IRU 600 is deployed in 25 state-wide public safety networks and hundreds of county networks. California, Colorado, and Florida are among the states in which these operations are in place. The solution is also used in the world’s largest LTE (News - Alert) networks and by half of the biggest U.S. utility companies, 70-year-old Aviat Networks says.
A recent blog from Aviat Networks says that microwave technology has made big leaps in the past decade. Those advances have included better spectral efficiency due to the development and adoption of frequency reuse techniques and higher modulation, more effective throughput due to compression and optimization, and more spectrum due to the use of multiple and wider channels.
