In sports, it is common to hear about an athlete taking the offseason to work on unpolished or underdeveloped skills to improve performance. Ethernet providers, on the other hand, do not have the luxury of an offseason, as to enhance operations in our multi-gigabit era requires a constant evolution of infrastructure, products and services.

Recently, Windstream (News - Alert) was rewarded for its improvement efforts, as the mid-year Vertical Systems Group Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD recognized the many improvements the provider of advanced network communications is making. For the third straight year, Windstream continues to climb the rankings.

“We are continuing to see growing demand for Ethernet services, particularly in areas where Windstream is targeting its strategic solutions,” said Rick Malone, principal of Vertical Systems Group. “Windstream’s investments in their local and national fiber networks have resulted in positive market share growth as reflected in our Mid-Year 2017 Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD rankings.”

How is Windstream making its rise? It has been a busy bee. Acquisitions of Broadview and EarthLink, Windstream was able to expand its long-haul fiber network. Now spanning 150,000 miles, with partners in more than 40 markets and a new and improved coast-to-coast footprint, great strides are taking place in the infrastructure arena.

Taking a step back, and looking at just its Carrier Ethernet offering shows a productive year. Investment in enabling secure Layer 2 services, adding SDN solutions and expanding the portfolio has resulted in increased customer value add – like, on-demand service or accelerated delivery of services. At the time of this article, Windstream employs the third highest number of Carrier Ethernet Certified Professionals among U.S.-based service providers, and recently achieved MEF (News - Alert) Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification. With the increased focus on its Ethernet business, Windstream is showing steady growth in on-net fiber buildings across the country.

”This move up in our ranking affirms that our strategy of increasing the availability and quality of our Ethernet solutions is succeeding,” said Joseph Harding, executive vice president and enterprise chief marketing officer of Windstream. “Additionally, the report reflects that we are providing our customers – both wholesale and enterprise across the country – the solutions they need for their continued business growth and success.”

The Carrier Ethernet space is competitive, to say the least. So, to see such marked growth and continual improvement is a strong sign for Windstream, a firm clearly not willing to settle for second best.
