Fiber is an amazing medium. It’s high bandwidth. It tends to be relatively low maintenance. And it has a load of business and consumer applications.
But the fact is that fiber is not available everywhere. And fiber is just one tool in the network operator’s toolkit.
Another tool is 4G LTE (News - Alert).
The new Liberator 305-LTE 1G network interface device from Net2Edge enables network operators to put that tool to work. It does that delivering Carrier Ethernet over fiber and 4G LTE.
Liberator 305-LTE was part of a proof of concept demonstration at the MEF17 event earlier this month. That demo involved using LTE to provide backup in a fiber failure scenario.
But that’s just one of many applications for the Liberator 305-LTE.
Another is to do dynamic bandwidth allocation for supplementary bandwidth. This NID can also provide network operators with a more rapid path to revenue since they don’t need to install fiber. Plus it can allow for the separation of data and management traffic.
Speaking of MEF17, the event took place Nov. 13 through 16. This gathering brought together more than 1,000 attendees from more than 275 companies. And it was the setting for 11 live proof of concept demonstrations.
Those PoC demos included one, staged by PCCW (News - Alert) Global, of on-demand orchestration of multi-domain services. Amdocs, AT&T, Ciena, Colt, Fujitsu, and Orange came together at MEF17 with their global virtual intercarrier fabric orchestrated by LSO APIs with an open source framework.
Other participants in the MEF17 demonstrations included Accedian, Amartus,
ADVA Optical Networking, CenturyLink, Coriant (News - Alert), Ericsson, EXFO, Infinera, Kvantel, Nuage Networks, OneAccess, Palo Alto, RAD, Spectrum Enterprise, Spirent, Telia, TIM, and Windstream.
MEF (News - Alert) also leveraged its event to introduce the MEF 3.0 framework. It enables the delivery of standardized, orchestrated services; features an LSO reference architecture; certifications; and expanded community collaboration.
