There’s good news on the Ethernet switching and router front. It experienced what IDC describes as “surprisingly strong growth” in the third quarter.

In terms of geography, Central and Eastern Europe were the strong performers in this product category – with quarterly year-over-year growth of 16.6 percent. The region’s standouts included the Czech Republic (up 47.3 percent) and Hungary (up 40.2 percent).

Asia Pacific and West Europe each recorded better than 12 percent year-over-year quarterly growth. China saw an increase of 19.4 percent. Germany expanded by 23.2 percent. And India was up 18.2 percent.

Meanwhile, North America was relatively sluggish.

“Among the major regions, North America was the outlier this quarter with somewhat weaker growth, whereas some key countries and regions outdid the market with a significantly high growth uptake in the switch and router segments respectively,” said Petr Jirovsky, research manager for Worldwide Networking Trackers at IDC (News - Alert). “There are opportunities for emerging OEM and ODM vendors to gain share while challenging more established vendors to rethink how they compete.”

Speaking of vendors in this space, the list includes such companies as Cisco, Huawei (News - Alert), Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Arista Networks, Juniper, and H3C.

Market leader Cisco held onto its top spot. And most of its numbers came in positive.

Cisco (News - Alert) finished 3Q17 with a year-over-year increase of 6.8 percent in the Ethernet switching market and market share of 56.7 percent, up from its 54.7 percent share in 2Q17 but slightly down from 57.0 percent in 3Q16.,” IDC explained. “In the vigorously contested 10GbE segment, Cisco held 53.3 percent of the market in 3Q17, up from 51.6 percent in the previous quarter. Cisco saw its combined service provider and enterprise router revenue increase 3 percent on an annual basis, while its market share came in at 41.4 percent in 3Q17, up from 40.8 percent in 2Q17, but down from 44 percent in 3Q16.

Arista, H3C, and Huawei also performed well in both the Ethernet switch and routing arenas, according to IDC. Meanwhile, Juniper’s Ethernet switching marketshare, and router revenues and share, were down slightly. And it was a bit of a mixed bag for HPE.
