Napatech, a vendor of intelligent adapters for network monitoring and analysis, today reached a significant milestone in its testing of a Dell (News - Alert) PowerEdge R720 rack server, hitting 100 Gbps throughput. In other words, this makes the PowerEdge R720 an excellent choice for OEM vendors with network appliances that need to analyze up to 10 ports at speeds of 10 Gbps.

"As part of our testing of the latest Dell PowerEdge servers, we were excited to see that the PowerEdge R720 was capable of providing 100 Gbps of throughput, something we have not seen previously," stated Henrik Brill Jensen, CEO of Napatech (News - Alert), in a statement. "This is a significant milestone and shows the tremendous power that is now available in standard servers."

Since Napatech is an OEM provider, it is important that its products can operate efficiently. As such, the company commonly tests intelligent adapters in the latest available servers in order to rule out any issues related to compatibility or performance. It was because of these testing practices that Napatech was able to hit such a high throughput with Dell's PowerEdge servers.

The configuration test consisted of a Dell PowerEdge R720 with dual hex-core Intel (News - Alert) Xeon E5-2600, 2.5 GHz processors and five Napatech NT20E2 dual port 10 Gbps low-profile adapters. With this setup, 10 ports were able to simultaneously generate 10 Gbps of traffic — a feat which was recorded with a packet capture application. The test ran for several hours without losing a single packet.

"We are excited by the performance that Napatech was able to achieve using a Dell PowerEdge R720 server and Napatech's NT20E2 adapters," said Ron Pugh, executive director and general manager, Dell OEM (News - Alert) Solutions, Americas, Dell.

In August, Napatech partnered with Spirent Federal Systems in order to power a live 40 GbE demonstration at the 2012 GFirst conference. The demonstration showcased Spirent and Napatech hardware running together to produce 40 Gbps of throughput.

Likewise, in June, the company partnered with Vineyard Networks to demonstrate its 10 Gbps DPI-enabled platform.
